Switching from a DSLR to mirrorless: when and to what
Still shooting a DSLR and thinking about switching? When it makes sense and what to focus on.
Switching from a DSLR to mirrorless today isn't just a trend – it's a real step forward in both handling and results. The technology has moved on dramatically over the last ten years.
The main reasons to switch:
- eye AF that tracks even the eyes of animals or athletes
- exposure preview in the viewfinder – you see the result instantly
- in-body image stabilization (IBIS), which lets you shoot handheld at slower shutter speeds
If slow focusing on moving subjects or noise in night scenes is holding you back, it's time to think about switching. What's more, you can use most of your old lenses on the new body via an adapter, so the transition doesn't have to be as painful as it seems.
What to focus on when choosing
With a used body, always check the shutter count. On models like the Canon EOS R6 or Sony A7 IV it will typically be in the thousands; with older units, wear becomes a risk. But more important than the click count is the condition of the sensor and the weather sealing.
For portraits, consider a fast aperture. The Sony 85 mm f/1.4 GM and Sony 35 mm f/1.4 GM are top of the line, but they aren't cheap; for everyday shooting, more affordable options will do. Bodies worth considering:
- Canon EOS R7 – a light and fast APS-C body for travel
- Canon EOS R6 Mark II or Sony A7 IV – pricier, but with a robust body, good autofocus and professional reliability
Don't forget that lenses are a long-term investment – the Sony 50 mm f/1.4 GM, for example, will last you for years and give you superbly sharp images.
How to decide and what to avoid
The most common mistake is buying a body without considering the availability of suitable lenses. Many photographers switch gradually and replace their gear piece by piece.
If the ideal lens isn't in stock right now, don't despair. For example, if you can't find the Sony 100 mm f/2.8 GM, try another 100 mm lens for your system. What matters is that the body has good autofocus and dynamic range; with used units, also check the condition of the battery and the memory card slots.
The most sensible approach is to start with a body I have on offer and add lenses gradually based on what you're missing. You'll avoid unnecessary spending and end up with a system that will serve you reliably for years.
