Sony A7C vs. A7C II: which compact full frame should you choose?

I compare Sony's two smallest full-frame cameras. Is the newer A7C II worth the extra money, and how do the two differ in practice?

When you're choosing your first full-frame camera or want to replace a heavy DSLR with a light body, the Sony A7C and its successor, the A7C II, are often the go-to choice. Both share the same compact form factor, but they differ in performance – and that's what decides how well they'll work for you while traveling, at a wedding or in the studio.

Design and compactness

Both models look and are built almost identically. They're light, sit well in the hand and their bodies are largely magnesium alloy. Both weigh around 500 g with the battery; the A7C II is just a few grams heavier. That makes both significantly lighter than classic full-frame DSLRs.

Ergonomically, the A7C II is slightly better: it has a more pronounced grip and better-placed controls, which you'll appreciate on longer shoots. If you plan to carry the camera in a backpack all day, either will do, but the A7C II is a bit more comfortable to work with.

Sensor and resolution

Here's the first major difference. The A7C uses an older 24 MP sensor. For most everyday situations, social media and even A3 prints, this resolution is still more than enough. Images are clean and dynamic range is decent.

The A7C II has a new 33 MP sensor. The higher resolution makes sense if you print large or crop often. But it also means bigger files, so plan on faster, higher-capacity cards.

Unless you're planning extreme enlargements, the difference in detail between 24 and 33 MP isn't as dramatic as it might seem.

Autofocus

Here the A7C II is the clear winner. The original A7C has solid autofocus, but it's a 2020 system with eye detection for people and animals.

The A7C II gets the newer AI-based subject recognition from Sony's more expensive models, with a dedicated AI processing unit. Besides people and animals, it also recognizes birds, insects and vehicles. If you shoot sports, animals or people in motion, the A7C II won't let you down. The A7C can handle dynamic scenes too, but it will hunt for focus more often.

Video

For video, the situation is clear. The A7C II shoots 4K from the full sensor width, oversampled from 7K, so the image is very sharp. It also supports internal 10-bit 4:2:2 recording and the S-Cinetone profile, which anyone who takes video seriously will appreciate.

The A7C also shoots oversampled 4K, but only in 8-bit and without S-Cinetone. For more serious video production, the A7C II is the clear choice.

Which one is right for you?

Choose the Sony A7C if you:

are starting out with full frame and want to save money,
mainly shoot portraits, landscapes and travel,
are fine with 24 MP, reliable autofocus and low weight.

Choose the Sony A7C II if you:

shoot video,
photograph dynamic scenes,
want a camera that will last you longer thanks to its higher performance.

The higher price pays off in a longer useful life and greater versatility. Both models are among the best compact full frames, and the decision mainly depends on whether you prioritize price or performance.
