Kids at home and outdoors: fast and simple

For kids you want speed and simplicity, not a menu full of settings. Which body and lens I'd pick and what to check on a used unit.

Kids are tireless and their movement tends to be chaotic. To capture lively moments at home and outdoors, you need a dependable camera with fast autofocus that copes with all kinds of light.

The key isn't the most expensive gear, but the right body and lens combination that you always have at hand. The camera has to react instantly, before your child runs out of the frame or the expression is gone.

Body

For action shots, ergonomics and reliability are what matter. The body has to be easy to handle and have a capable AF system. Right now I have these units on hafoto.cz that fit the bill:

Sony A7 IV or Canon EOS R6 Mark II – versatile full-frame bodies with top-tier performance
Canon EOS R7 – a fast APS-C body
Nikon Z6 II – a full-frame alternative from Nikon

Lenses

With these bodies I recommend fast lenses that handle low indoor light:

Sony 35 mm f/1.4 GM – a fast choice for indoors and the street
Sony 50 mm f/1.4 GM – a classic, natural perspective
Sony 85 mm f/1.4 GM or Sony 100 mm f/2.8 STF GM – portraits with beautifully blurred backgrounds

It's important that the lens is in good condition and the body has a low shutter count – I check both on every unit I sell.

What to check when buying

With used gear, focus on the condition of the body and the glass:

front and rear elements free of scratches, which can cause unwanted flare
working aperture and autofocus
the body's shutter count – on modern cameras it doesn't say that much about functionality, but it shows how heavily the camera has been used

There's no universally “best” combination. If one of the lenses above isn't available, look for an alternative with a similar maximum aperture and focal length. The main thing is that the system works reliably and you can focus on shooting, not on technical problems.
